Rekeying and high-security cylinders
New place, old tenant, lost keys, or a contractor who never gave the set back — rekeying keeps the hardware and changes what the key turns. When key control matters, we step you up to a high-security cylinder.
Rekey first, replace only when it is earned
On most Park Slope doors a rekey is the cheaper and faster answer than a new lock. We re-pin the existing cylinder so the old keys stop working, cut fresh keys, and on rowhouses we usually key the vestibule and the apartment door alike so one key runs both. If a lock is mechanically worn we say so and price the replacement honestly — a working lock does not get swapped just to sell hardware.
High-security cylinders: Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, Abloy
The value of a high-security cylinder is key control. Blanks are restricted, so a tenant, a cleaner or a contractor cannot walk into a hardware store and copy your key; duplicates need your documented authorization. The cylinders also carry pick, bump and drill resistance. They retrofit into most existing mortise cases and deadbolts, which matters on landmark blocks in Park Slope and Carroll Gardens where changing the face of the door is not an option.
Buildings, boards and turnovers
Co-op and condo boards from Prospect Heights to Windsor Terrace ask us for the same thing: documented, restricted key control for staff and a written chart. We set up the system, hand over the chart, and handle unit-door rekeys during turnovers so management never has to think about who still holds a key.
- Rekey after a move, sale or tenant turnover
- Key-alike sets so one key runs the whole door line
- Mul-T-Lock, Medeco and Abloy high-security cylinders
- Restricted keyways with documented key control
- Deadbolt and knob replacement in matching finishes
- Retrofits into existing mortise cases

Straight answers
Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?
Almost always — you keep the hardware and only the pinning changes. We tell you when a lock is worn enough that replacement is the honest answer.
I just bought a brownstone. Rekey or replace?
Rekey everything on day one, including locks the seller lost keys to, and key the units separately from the owner's set. Replace only what is mechanically failing.
Will a high-security cylinder fit my existing door?
Usually yes — Mul-T-Lock, Medeco and Abloy cylinders retrofit into most existing mortise cases and deadbolts without altering the door.
